The Healthymagination Mother & Child Initiative (HMCI), a three-year program geared towards addressing maternal and child mortality challenges by training and educating healthcare Professionals, primarily midwives, in the use and application of portable ultrasound as a triaging tool, within an integrated healthcare system delivery set-up, to guide the keep or refer decision, thereby Helping with early identification of pregnancy risks to improve patient outcomes. Four states were selected for implementation of the HMCI program: Kano, Cross River, Bauchi and Ondo. This project is part of the exit strategy of the Nigeria Population and Reproductive Health program and has contributed to reduction in maternal and perinatal mortality burden in Nigeria

Society of Gynaecology and obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON)’s on March 2017, signed a contract agreement with General Electric, to train and mentor health care workers (Midwives, Nurses and antenatal primary health care givers) on the use and application of portable ultrasound.

Key accomplishments of the project so far are as follows;

  • About 1800 pregnant mothers in total have been scanned as of December 2017 in the states of implementation.
  • About 180 Vscan access machines have been deployed to the state of implementation
  • About 360 health care workers have completed class room training.

The Health imagination mother and child initiative program is seen to be beneficial to Nigerian Primary health care. It was projected that if all devices deployed continue to be used, it is expected that by the end of the project,

  • 560,000 expectant Nigerian mothers are to benefit by 2020
  • 1,120,000 antenatal scans are expected to be conducted by 2020
  • 28,000 total hours of training for 360 midwives and antenatal primary health care gives, would have been completed by 2020.
