To reduce maternal mortality and morbidity, CHAI will provide support to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) at the national level in addition to engaging four states, including Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Rivers, to expand access to reproductive health services. Within the country’s legal framework, CHAI aims to ensure that women have access to safe medically indicated abortion services and post-abortion care with access to family planning services. A memorandum to this effect was signed in 2018 between CHAI and SOGON.

In collaboration with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), SOGON is developing capacity-building curriculum focused on training of Skilled Birth Attendants (SBAs) in selected facilities in supported States (Rivers, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina). The materials are intended to complement existing Harm reduction guidelines and facilitate the training of health workers on harm reduction.

A four (4) days Technical Working Group Meeting to develop Curriculum on Harm Reduction adopting the National Guideline was held on December 10th– 13th, 2018 at the Conference room, SOGON Secretariat, Abuja. In attendance were members of SOGON Executives, SOGON Sector Representatives, Representatives of the FMOH, Partners which includes CHAI, PPFN, CHPRBN, NEMCN, Marie stopes, PSI and SOGON project Staffs. As an output of the meeting, draft documents were developed by the team. These drafts were also reviewed and sent out to all participants of the meeting for further input.

The draft documents currently await review and approval by the Federal Ministry of Health to go to print.
