In 2013, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation created a portfolio of seven grants to work collaboratively to increase government accountability for maternal health in Nigeria. SOGON as a professional association with leadership role on maternal health was recipient to this grant. SOGON signed a sub-agreement with MacArthur Foundation to implement Maternal Death Review (MDR) now Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) in six (6) project sites in FCT (Three Primary health centres and Three Secondary Health facilities). Namely: Nyanya, Bwari and Kwali General Hospitals (secondary health facilities), and Kwali, Gbagalape and Kogo (primary health facilities

One of SOGON’s main contributions within the project is towards reducing maternal death through the implementation of Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) in FCT.

The Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) believes that the establishment of MPDSR will create:

  • Better understanding of the determinants and risk factors for maternal and perinatal mortality
  • Assist policy makers and program designers to better allocate resources for improving maternal and perinatal health.
  • It will also help strengthen the health systems toward taking definitive measures to correct institutional and community causes of maternal and perinatal death.

When these are done at Local Government, State and National levels, it is assumed that there will be a progressive and sustainable reduction of maternal and perinatal mortality.

In partnership with Mac-Arthur foundation, SOGON key accomplishments so far are as follows,

  • Production of 3600 copies of Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance Review (MPDSR) tools for implementing facility based and community based MPDSR, and also used for monitoring and evaluating both processes.
  • Supported FCT to train 30 PHCs (3 participants from each of 5 PHCs in each of the 6 Area councils of FCT and 6HODs and 6MCH coordinators for 5 area councils).
  • Supported FCT to train 8 secondary facilities and 2 tertiary facilities. 42 participants from secondary facilities and 19 participants from tertiary facilities.
  • Supported FCT to train 8 secondary facilities and 2 tertiary facilities. 42 participants from secondary facilities and 19 participants from tertiary facilities.
  • Continuous monitoring to the six SOGON –MacArthur supported facilities.
  •  Supported regular meetings of the MPDSR committees to analyse the data on causes of maternal death and perinatal death.
